
In English, "Tarul" (तरुल) generally means Yam. Eaten mostly like a vegetable and is supposed to be nutritious and healthy. When we did not have potatoes, the entire Indian Subcontinent dependent on Yam, a major backyard biodiversity food. It is in places like Arunachal Pradesh, you may come across many kinds of Yams being consumed on this date. "Richer the biodiversity, greater is the variety of food".
Yams, often looked at as a "poor man's food", rich in complex carbs, fiber, potassium, manganese, copper, and Vitamin C, offering energy and supporting bone health, immunity, and brain function. They contain antioxidants, resistant starch, and essential amino acids, with varying levels of vitamins (B6, C, E) and minerals (iron, magnesium, phosphorus).
It is time to celebrate our yams through this slow food and tourism festival.
